Résumé

Ancient Arab poetic heritage remains an imaginative treasure that is not fully explored using various modern critical mechanisms, especially the concepts of reception theory, which can delve into the hidden meaning of the text that the reader forms and activates, unlike what structuralism did, which sufficed with interpreting textual patterns away from poetic meaning.

Therefore, reception theory can be employed in reading ancient Arab literary texts, in order to discover the role of the recipient in building its gaps and hidden meanings. This study has worked on this by activating the concept of the implicit reader, in revealing the imaginations of the text of Antarah bin Shaddad's Mu'allaqa. This is why the interpretive work in analyzing Antarah bin Shaddad's Mu'allaqa came in accordance with the data of this theory, especially with regard to the concept of the implicit reader of the text.

This study confirms that the pre-Islamic poet is a conscious and aware entity of the requirements of the literary creation process, because he places in his mind that inevitable presence of the reader who is an essential partner in the birth of the literary text and the creation of its superficial and deep meanings. It is as if the pre-Islamic poet realizes that his text will be read by recipients from different times and with various critical and analytical mechanisms. Therefore, the researcher must realize this equation when understanding the pre-Islamic poetic discourse.
